Teresa Riera Madurell, University Professor, studied Exact Sciences at the University of Barcelona and got her PhD Degree in 1981. She was Academic Secretary at the Faculty of Information Technology at the Polytechnic University of Barcelona. Vice-chairwoman and, subsequently, Chairwoman of the College of Business Studies and Information Technology at the University of the Balearic Islands (1986-1990) and Vice-Rector at the same University (1991-1994). She was Research Associate at the University of California (Berkeley, USA) in 1991 and 1982 as well as Visiting Researcher at the University of Carnegie Mellon (Pennsylvania, USA). Her research work has been related to non-classical logic, rough reasoning and their application to artificial intelligence. She has published scientific articles in specialised journals and presented several speeches in conferences of her field. She has also published books and articles in the field of Didactics of Mathematics and Science popularisation.

In 1978 she joined the Party of Catalonian Socialists (PSC-PSOE) and the Teachers Trade Union FETE-UGT in 1981. Her political career has developed in the following fields: education (especially University education), culture, science, technology and industry, women's rights, peace and development. In the PSIB-PSOE she was Press Secretary (1988-1991) and Secretary for the Involvement of Women (1991-1994) in the Executive Committee of the party. Chair of the PSIB-PSOE (1994-1997) and Member of the Federal Executive Committee of the PSOE (1996-2000). Member of the Federal Guarantees Committee of the PSOE (2000-2004).

She was Member of the Parliament of the Balearic Islands and Member of Mallorca Island Council (1989-1996). Member of the Congress of Deputies in Spain (1996-2004). Member of the Parliamentary Assembly of NATO (2000-2004).

From 2004 she has been Member of the European Parliament. At present she is Member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy coordinating the Group of Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats. She is also substitute in the Committee on Foreign Affairs (Sub-Committee on Security and Defence) and is involved in the ASEAN, NATO, EURONEST and South Caucasus Parliamentary Assembly Delegations.
