Professor for German medieval studies at Ludwig Maximilians University Munich and Chairman of the German Council of Science and Humanities (WR).

Born 1955. He studied German language and literature and history and, additionally, law, sociology and politics at Munich Ludwig-Maximilians-University 1975-1982. In 1984, he did his doctoral degree in Munich and, in 1991, a post-doctoral degree (Habilitation) in the specialist field German language and literature of the middle ages. In 1992, he received the Research Award of the Münchener Universitätsgesellschaft. From 1993 to 2002, Dr. Strohschneider was professor for German medieval studies and early modern history at Technische Universität Dresden. In 2001, he was guest professor at Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris and offered a chair by Tübingen University (declined). Since 2002, he is professor for German medieval studies at Munich University. Since 2005, he is a member of the German Science and Humanities Council; as well as Chairman of the German Science and Humanities Council since 2006.

His research work focuses on media-anthropological and cultural-anthropological, mentality-historical and civilisation-historical issues of medieval literary studies, narrative literature of the middle ages and early modern history, minstrel and medieval lyric poetry as well as the theory of pre-modern text.
