Enric BANDA was born in Girona (Spain) in 1948. He is a solid Earth geophysicist. He carried out a postdoctorate at the Federal Politechnical School in Zurich where he participated in research projects at European scale. In 1987 he was appointed as Research Professor of Spanish National Scientific Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC) and appointed Director of the Earth Sciences Institute in Barcelona. In 1994 he was appointed General Secretary of the National R+D Plan and in 1995 Secretary of State for Universities and Research until May 1996. In November 1997 he was elected Secretary General of the European Science Foundation, a position that he took over in June 1998 until the end of 2003. In 2004 he was appointed Director of the Catalan Research and Innovation Foundation (FCRI) and of the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA).

He has been vice-president of the European Geophysical Society. He is member of the "European Academy", belongs to numerous scientific societies, and has been editor-in-chief of Tectonophysics and European editor of Geophysical Research Letters (American Geophysical Union). His research work as geophysicist has focused on the structure and evolution of the earth’s lithosphere in subjects related with both basic and applied research. The main scientific lines can be included within seismology, potential fields, tectonics and geodynamic modelling. He is author of more than 160 scientific papers and has been invited to give conferences in several European and American universities. 

Presently he is Director of Science, Research and Environment at the "La Caixa" Foundation
