Peter Wittenburg is a Technical Director at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, The Netherlands; he is also a member of the MPI central IT advisory board. He has a background in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (Berlin). At MPI he has been active in Digital Signal Processing, focusing on real time eye tracking, gesture analysis and pitch detection. He has also worked on the extension of artificial neural networks to model speech processing phenomena. During the last years he has focused on infrastructures and tools to allow linguists to create multimedia annotations and lexica, using metadata to describe, organize, manage and federate large data sets. He and his team have set up one of the largest open standards-based archives for multimedia language resources. He has participated in national and international projects in linguistic infrastructure building and standardization and organized many workshops in this area. In ISO TC37/SC4 his main interests are lexical modeling, setting up an ontology structure based on the ISO DCR, and defining other standards for improving interoperability.
