Montserrat Torné was born in Albaigés (Lleida) in 1958. She is a solid earth geophysicist. She carried out her postdoctoral work in geophysics at the Lamont Doherty Geological Observatory of Columbia University (New York) and in the Department of Earth Sciences at Oxford University. In 2000 she was elected Director of the Barcelona Earth Sciences Institute (Spanish Council for Scientific Research; Spanish acronym, CSIC). In 2002 she was appointed advisory member of the president's office of the CSIC. From 2003 to the end of 2006 she served as  Deputy Director General for International Relations and Vice-president for Organisation and Institutional Relations of the CSIC. In 2007 she was appointed Deputy Director of the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA). From September 2007 to April 2008 she was Director General of Research of the Ministry of Education and Science. Since May 2008 she has been Director General for International Cooperation and in Abril 2009 she was appointed Director General for International Cooperation and Institutional Relations. For over 15 years her research has focused on the study of the structure and composition of the earth’s lithosphere and its interaction with the asthenosphere. Her work lies in various areas: seismology, potential fields, tectonics and geodynamic modelling. She is a member of the European Academy, belongs to numerous scientific societies, and has been a member of the editorial board of Tectonophysics.
